How to apply
Ready to embark on your journey to becoming an inspiring teacher with the Rural Schools Alliance? This page provides you with all the essential information on how to apply for our school-led PGCE programme. We're here to guide you through the process, making it as smooth and straightforward as possible.
When Should I Apply?
The application window for teacher training typically opens in October for courses starting the following September. However, we encourage you to apply as soon as you feel ready. Here's why:
- Secure your place: Training providers, including the RSA, allocate places as applications are received. Popular courses can fill up quickly, so early application increases your chances of securing your preferred route.
- Offer conditions: We may set conditions as part of your offer, such as completing a Subject Knowledge Enhancement (SKE) course before your training begins. Applying early gives you ample time to fulfil these requirements.
- Plan ahead: Applying early provides you with more time to organise your finances and make any necessary arrangements for your training year. (Make sure you check what bursaries and scholarships are available - click here to find out.)
What Information Do I Need to Include in My Application?
When you apply through the central government portal, you can select up to four courses at a time. You'll need to provide the following details:
Your Qualifications:
Please provide accurate information about your:
- GCSEs: Including grades achieved.
- A Levels (or equivalent): Details of subjects and grades.
- Undergraduate Degree: Including the classification and institution.
We understand that applicants may have diverse educational backgrounds. If you hold equivalent qualifications, particularly if you're a non-UK citizen, our partners at the University of Winchester will assess these to ensure they meet the required standards. If you're unsure, please do apply, and we can facilitate this check.
Your Work Experience:
Please detail all employment you've held, particularly since leaving full-time education. It's important to explain any gaps in your employment history longer than a month. If you haven't had formal employment (for example, if you've been a full-time student or have been caring for a family member), please state this clearly. You can also highlight any unpaid experience, such as volunteering, and explain how this experience supports your application to become a teacher.
Your Personal Statement:
This is your opportunity to tell us why you're passionate about teaching and why you believe you'd be a great fit for the RSA. Take your time to craft a thoughtful and compelling statement that showcases your skills, experiences, and aspirations. This is a crucial part of your application, so make it count!
Your Adjustments:
At the RSA, we are committed to inclusivity and ensuring everyone has the opportunity to succeed. If you require any adjustments during the application process, interviews, or throughout your training due to neurodiversity, a long-term health condition, or any accessibility needs, please let us know. You can request support when you apply or contact us directly to discuss your individual requirements. We're here to help.
Your References:
You will need to provide contact details for two referees who can comment on your suitability for teacher training. Please ensure you have their permission before including their information. Your referees will only be contacted if you accept a place on a course.
Ready to Start Your Application?
The application process is managed through the central government website - Apply. You'll need to create an account and complete the online application form. You don't have to complete it all at once – you can save your progress and return to it later.
